The Great Wall of China
Number One of the New Seven Wonders of the World

Great Wall of China experience is a life-time experience. It is guaranteed to be unforgettable.

The Great Wall is the greatest architectural construction of its kind. It is the longest man-made structure on earth. It is also a miracle. As a Chinese, I am proud to present the Great Wall of China.

The Great Wall climbs up over mountains, into rivers, across deserts, spanning thousands of miles and different time periods. Though the actual length of the Great Wall is difficult to measure, the most frequently quoted length is 6,700 km.

In 1987, UNESCO listed the Great Wall of China as a World Cultural Heritage.

Structure of the Great Wall
The Great Wall of China is a massive ancient military defensive mechanism. Its origination was mainly to keep northern invaders out of China.

The foundation of the Great Wall is mostly rugged mountains. Even the most superior architect today would find it impossible to build something on such a foundation. Ancient Chinese made it.

Imagine the transportation of giant rocks and stones up steep mountains without any engineering support. It was all on manpower. It was really something beyond human capabilities. It was at the expenses of countless human lives.

Along ridges of mountains, the highest point of the Great Wall is 1,300 meters above sea level. The Wall itself is between 5 meters to 10 meters tall depending on the landscape. If the location is hazardous, the wall is a bit lower. Otherwise the wall is higher.

Rocks were believed to be joint together using glutinous rice solution.

Military defensive mechanisms along the Great Wall are watchtowers, beacon towers, ramparts, embrasures, peep-holes and apertures for archers and so on. Once enemies were spotted, signal fires will be lit and soldiers will get ready to fight.

Anna’s Notes
Today, when you stand on the ramparts, you can easily imagine you’re defending against the northern nomads. You can also imagine how lonely the soldiers were to live on the guardhouses along the wall, guarding their country.

While admiring the beautiful scenery along the Great Wall, don’t forget you are walking on the greatest achievement of ancient Chinese civilization, something built on numerous human lives, blood and tear. Moreover, you can imagine how imperial rulers didn’t respect lives of their people.

Think of how difficult the Great Wall of China was built, you would make no complaint even if you find it difficult to climb.
